Bone Mineral Density

—convenient assessments of your bone health—

A bone mineral density (BMD) scan is essential at all stages of life and is a valuable tool for assessing bone health and diagnosing conditions such as osteoporosis and low bone density (osteopenia).

BoneHealth BC aims to provide accessible and accurate bone health analysis to indicated populations and people at risk throughout our province.

BENEFITS

OF A BONE MINERAL DENSITY SCAN

A Bone Mineral Density (BMD) scan is a valuable tool for determining bone health, assessing osteoporosis, and guiding preventive and treatment measures to reduce the risk of fractures and maintain bone strength.

BoneHealth BC uses a new, validated technology called Echolight R.E.M.S. This radiation-free alternative is FDA and Health Canada approved and widely used in Europe.

The risk of osteoporosis doubles every 5 years between the age of 40 and 65.

BoneHealth BC's Dr Todd Levins, ND, chats with women's health advocate, Kim Vopni, to discuss the connections between bone health, menopause, and pelvic health.

Both Kim and Todd discuss the importance of empowering menopausal women to get ahead of the curve in bone health screening with evidence-based tools and technology that help change the trajectory of how we think about bone and pelvic health.

  • "Osteoporosis has been part of my life for several years. After conversations with Dr. Levins, I now have a plan that is tailored to my needs and my lifestyle. Diet, supplement and exercise steps that are manageable and achievable. And these can be revisited as needed to monitor progress. Accountability makes me determined. Having a foundation of support makes me hopeful."

    SANDRA

  • "I had a fabulous, substantive, informative, calming conversation with Dr. Levins and am so appreciative of all the great support being offered to me. I feel much more in control and accepting, I suppose, of what lies ahead."

    MARLENE

  • "From the patient's perspective, one of the most pressing needs is  timely feedback. Waiting two or three years to discover that a treatment has not worked can be devastating. As Dr. Levins emphasized, earlier intervention is critical — not only for physical health, but also for mental well‑being. In speaking with others who live with osteoporosis, the overwhelming thread I hear is: “I’ve been told to do this, but I don’t know if it’s working.”  That uncertainty is difficult. Having practitioners who can provide guidance and feedback sooner rather than later makes a tremendous difference in helping patients feel supported, in control, and able to adjust before problems escalate."

SCAN

REMS (Radiofrequency Echographic Multi-Spectrometry) technology combines ultrasound and radiofrequency to measure the quantity and quality of bones.

BoneHealth BC uses the Echolight R.E.M.S ultrasound technology platform to assess bone health and safely improve clinical and functional bone-related outcomes.

REPORT

BoneHealth BC provides your report through JaneApp’s secure, confidential transfer portal or via email. Our reports can then be reviewed with your primary care provider, who will develop a bone-health-centered plan.

BoneHealth BC cares about your health, so we work hard to develop and maintain a continuity of care model. This model allows patients, with or without a primary care provider, to access virtual medical care and establish personalized care plans.

Am I a candidate for a bone mineral density scan?

Bone mineral density scans are relevant whether you are 70 or 30—and they’re just as important for a person leading an inactive lifestyle as they are to a person leading an active one.

Bones become stronger when load (i.e. resistance training) is placed on them; therefore, the bones in an inactive person can become weak with a lack of activity.

Knowing your bone density and your risk of bone disease empowers you to take a proactive approach to your bone health.
